John Konrads (born Jānis Konrads) was an Australian swimmer prominent in the 1950s and 1960s, specializing in freestyle. Best known for winning the 1,500 m freestyle at the 1960 Rome Olympics, Konrads set 26 individual world records during his career and, with his sister Ilsa, formed the duo nicknamed the “Konrads Kids.” Trained intensively from childhood, he excelled at national championships and at the 1958 Commonwealth Games before confirming his dominance with multiple records across distances from 200 yd/200 m to 1,650 yd/1,500 m. In Rome, besides the gold in the 1,500 m, he took bronze in the 4×200 m relay. After retiring from competition, he studied in the United States and returned to Australia, where he worked as a coach and, after training in marketing, became regional director for L’Oréal in Australasia. He also founded a consultancy and an advertising agency. In his personal life, he publicly discussed his experience with bipolar disorder, helping to raise awareness. Part of his collection of medals and memorabilia was auctioned, and another historic item—his Olympic gold medal—was recovered years after it was stolen and is now on loan to the National Sports Museum.
