John Le Mesurier was an English actor whose long career is best known for the comic role of Sergeant Arthur Wilson in the television series Dad’s Army (1968–1977). Describing himself as a "jobbing actor," he appeared in more than 120 films, usually in supporting parts that made use of his unassuming, genial presence—often authority figures such as officers, policemen and judges. Trained at the Fay Compton Studio of Dramatic Art, Le Mesurier began in repertory theatre in the 1930s and was among the first actors to work in television in 1938. His career included tours in classical productions and collaborations with figures such as Alec Guinness and John Gielgud, establishing him as a versatile performer from stage to screen. During the Second World War he served as a captain in the Royal Tank Regiment in India; after the conflict he resumed his film and television career, appearing in comedies and in work alongside Tony Hancock. In 1971 he received the BAFTA for Best Television Actor for Traitor, a rare award for a more prominent role. Le Mesurier left a legacy of restrained professionalism and a keen comic sensibility, remembered by critics and the public as a beloved performer whose quiet presence brought humanity to secondary characters.
