Joseph Carey Merrick, popularly known as the “Elephant Man,” was a singular figure of Victorian England whose congenital deformity drew public and medical attention at the end of the 19th century. Initially exhibited in freak shows, Merrick endured humiliation and exploitation, but at times was cared for by medical professionals and members of high society who provided protection and treatment at the London Hospital.
