John Milton was an English poet, essayist and civil servant whose work and political activity profoundly shaped the 17th century. Educated at Cambridge, he studied classical and modern languages and wrote poetry in English, Latin and Italian; his literary career culminated in the epic Paradise Lost (1667), a central work of the English canon. Milton lived through the turmoil of the English Revolution: he published pamphlets opposing the episcopacy and advocated republican ideas, becoming Secretary for Foreign Tongues during Oliver Cromwell’s government. His Areopagitica (1644) remains a historical touchstone in the defense of freedom of expression and the press. Blind from the mid-1650s, he continued to produce his most important poetry during and after the Restoration, despite losing political influence and enduring financial hardship. His political prose influenced later constitutional thought and secured Milton a lasting legacy as one of the most prominent authors in the English language.
