John Muir was a naturalist, explorer, writer, and preservationist born in Scotland who played a central role in the creation of the United States’ earliest protected areas and in the consolidation of the modern conservation movement. Influenced by Romanticism and his studies of natural history, he advocated a biocentric view of nature, valuing it for its spiritual and intrinsic worth and calling for strong protection against human exploitation.
Throughout his life he traveled widely, explored the Sierra Nevada and Yosemite intensively—where he developed glaciological theories and lived in close contact with the landscape—and published hundreds of articles and several books that swayed politicians and the public. His writings helped prompt protections such as the designation of Yosemite National Park and contributed to the establishment of other conservation units.
In 1892 he founded the Sierra Club and served as its first president, becoming an influential figure in campaigns opposing projects that threatened protected areas, notably the controversial Hetch Hetchy dam. His legacy endures in parks, monuments, and institutions bearing his name and in the environmental ethic that shaped U.S. preservation policy.
