John Quincy Adams II was an American lawyer and politician from a family with a long record of public service; he was the son of Charles Francis Adams Sr. and namesake of former president John Quincy Adams. A Harvard graduate, he practiced law and also devoted himself to experimental agriculture on an estate in Quincy, Massachusetts, where he sought to modernize rural practices. During the Civil War he served on Governor John Andrew’s staff with the rank of colonel. After the conflict he held several municipal offices in Quincy — including moderator of town meetings, president of the school board, and local magistrate — and established a presence in state politics. First elected as a Republican to the Massachusetts Legislature in 1866, he switched to the Democratic Party in disagreement with federal Reconstruction policy. He was repeatedly the Democratic nominee for governor and stood as a candidate for lieutenant governor, but was unsuccessful in those campaigns. His public life was marked by a party realignment and active involvement in local and state affairs, as well as efforts to forge political alternatives in the post–Civil War period. He left a legacy tied both to public service and to the promotion of experimental agricultural methods.
