John Heinrich Detlef Rabe was a German businessman affiliated with Siemens and a member of the Nazi Party, whose notoriety stems primarily from his actions during the Nanjing Massacre of 1937–1938. Using his position within the European community and his political credentials, he coordinated the International Committee that created and administered the Nanjing Safety Zone, a refuge credited with saving hundreds of thousands of Chinese civilians from the executions and looting carried out by Japanese troops.
Rabe organized shelters, food supplies, and the documentation of atrocities, keeping a diary that became an important historical record. His appeals to Japanese authorities, though not always successful, helped delay attacks and protect refugees; estimates cited in contemporary sources attribute to him a decisive role in protecting about 250,000 civilians.
After leaving Nanjing, Rabe returned to Germany, where he faced interrogations by the Gestapo over his protests, remained connected to Siemens and, after the war, was briefly detained by Soviet and British forces. His legacy is complex: remembered as a rescuer of civilians during one of the twentieth century’s greatest atrocities, he remains a figure studied both for his humanitarian actions and for his political affiliation.
