John Glover Roberts Jr. is an American lawyer and jurist who has served since 2005 as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, the seventeenth to hold that office. Nominated by George W. Bush, he took office following the death of his predecessor and was confirmed by the Senate by a wide margin. Before that, he served as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and spent years as an attorney in the Department of Justice and in the White House Counsel’s Office.
