John Glover Roberts Jr. is an American lawyer and jurist who has served since 2005 as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, the seventeenth to hold that office. Nominated by George W. Bush, he took office following the death of his predecessor and was confirmed by the Senate by a wide margin. Before that, he served as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and spent years as an attorney in the Department of Justice and in the White House Counsel’s Office. Roberts’s jurisprudence is generally described as aligned with a conservative judicial philosophy, but his tenure on the Court has been marked by occasions in which he cast decisive votes, especially after Anthony Kennedy’s retirement in 2018. He presided over cases of significant institutional consequence, including the first impeachment trial of Donald Trump in 2020; he opted not to preside over the second trial after the president’s term had ended. Beyond his judicial career, Roberts has contributed numerous articles and tributes to legal journals and law reviews, addressing topics such as the judiciary’s powers, the practice of oral advocacy, and the Court’s history. His public legacy centers on institutional leadership of the Supreme Court and the influence of his opinions and positions on contemporary constitutional law.
