John Arthur Spenkelink was an American convict whose 1979 execution became a landmark in the United States debate over capital punishment. Sentenced to first‑degree murder for killing Joseph Szymankiewicz in 1973, Spenkelink refused a plea deal to manslaughter that would have spared him the death penalty and maintained a self‑defense claim.
