John Tyler was an American lawyer and politician who reached the height of his career when he became the 10th President of the United States (1841–1845), assuming office after the death of William Henry Harrison. From a prominent Virginia family, he held several public offices — state legislator, Governor of Virginia, Representative and Senator — before being chosen as the Whig ticket’s vice presidential candidate in 1840 to attract Southern support and defenders of states’ rights. As president, Tyler confronted fierce conflict with his own party: although initially part of the Whig coalition, he vetoed key measures of the caucus as unconstitutional, prompting the resignation of much of his cabinet and his expulsion from the party. He set the constitutional precedent of assuming full presidential authority by taking the oath immediately after the incumbent’s death. In foreign policy he achieved notable results, signing the Webster–Ashburton Treaty with the United Kingdom and a commercial treaty with Qing China, and he devoted the final years of his term to the annexation of Texas, which was completed shortly afterward by his successor. Though praised for political resolve, his presidency is generally judged negatively by historians and his public memory is comparatively modest.
