John Wayne Bobbitt is an American public figure whose notoriety stems from a widely reported episode in the 1990s: in 1993 his then-wife cut off part of his genitalia during a domestic crisis, an event that drew major media and legal attention. A former Marine and bar security worker, Bobbitt underwent successful reconstructive surgery and in subsequent years sought to capitalize on his fame through varied activities, including appearances in adult films and forming a band. The case also became a focal point for debates about domestic violence, consent and sensationalist media coverage, as the criminal proceedings involved allegations of abuse and conflicting accounts from the parties. John was acquitted of sexual assault charges, while his then-wife was found not guilty by reason of temporary insanity. Later, Bobbitt experienced legal and personal troubles, including convictions for assault, involvement in thefts and periods of incarceration, along with informal employment in various sectors. In more recent years he reported serious health problems, including amputations of toes and complications related to peripheral neuropathy.
