John Wilmot, second Earl of Rochester, was an English poet and courtier central to the court of Charles II during the Restoration. Born to an influential family, he was educated at Oxford and traveled in France and Italy; he married heiress Elizabeth Malet but became famous for numerous love affairs and a libertine lifestyle that defined his reputation. A literary philosopher influenced by Hobbes and by French libertines, Wilmot cultivated a cynical hedonism that pervades his work and public behavior. His poetry, often satirical and aggressive, blends the metaphysical inheritance of John Donne with corrosive irony aimed at social hypocrisy and the monarchy; poems such as A Satire against Mankind and The Imperfect Enjoyment stand out for their energy and mordant wit. Rochester’s work circulated widely in manuscript and was printed only after his death; the pamphlet Sodom is also attributed to him and was prosecuted for obscenity. He died young, marked by illness and excess, leaving an ambiguous legacy: scandalous and critical, yet, according to later writers, a vigorous poetic voice that influenced European translators and literati.
