John Woodrow Parsons was a prominent American racing driver in the 1940s and 1950s, competing in the AAA and USAC series. The 1949 AAA national champion, he reached the peak of his career by winning the Indianapolis 500 in 1950, a result that places him among the few to triumph on their debut in the FIA World Championship of Drivers when the race counted toward that title. A native of Los Angeles, Parsons combined mechanical talent with a showman’s flair inherited from a childhood in an artist family, which made him popular with spectators. Known as a “charger,” he was famous for recovering positions from the back of the grid to the front, demonstrating overtaking skill and endurance in long races. A teammate of Frank Kurtis and active in categories such as midgets and sprint cars, Parsons also left a technical and institutional legacy: after retiring he served as Chief Steward of USAC’s midget division on the West Coast. His career includes championships, landmark victories, and a pioneering role in the golden age of American single-seater racing.
