Johnny Horton was an American singer and musician active in the 1950s, known for moving between country, honky tonk and rockabilly. He became known for narrative songs inspired by historical episodes, which brought him international success; his greatest hit was “The Battle of New Orleans” (1959), which won the 1960 Grammy for Best Country & Western Recording and remained a landmark of his career. Throughout the decade, Horton placed hits on the country charts, such as “When It’s Springtime in Alaska (It’s Forty Below)” and, in 1960, “Sink the Bismarck” and “North to Alaska” — the latter associated with the John Wayne film. His career included appearances on important programs such as the Louisiana Hayride and contracts with labels like Mercury and Columbia, as well as the adoption of rockabilly elements after the influence of Elvis Presley. Killed in 1960 at the height of his popularity, Horton left a legacy recognized for combining historical narrative with popular sound; he is a member of several regional music halls of fame, underscoring his influence on American country and rockabilly.
