Jonah Tali Lomu was a professional rugby player from New Zealand whose career and physique transformed the sport in the 1990s and 2000s. Unusually tall and heavy for a wing, he combined rare speed, strength and agility, creating a new prototype for the position and becoming a major draw in matches and tournaments. Revealed internationally while still a teenager, he became the youngest All Black in history when he debuted at 19 and achieved worldwide fame in Rugby World Cups, scoring 15 tries across two tournaments — a competition record. His display at the 1995 World Cup, including four tries in the semi‑final, cemented his reputation as a sporting phenomenon and boosted rugby’s commercial appeal in the professional era. Over his career he played for franchises and clubs in New Zealand, Wales and France, and received honours such as induction into halls of fame and appointment to the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to rugby. Off the field, he was noted for supporting Pacific communities and for acting as an ambassador for organisations connected to kidney disease, a condition that contributed to the premature end of his professional career.
