José Francisco de San Martín y Matorras was a military leader in the independence struggles of southern South America, playing a decisive role in the processes that led to the emancipation of Argentina, Chile and Peru. Trained in Spanish schools and armies, he fought Napoleon’s forces on the Iberian Peninsula, an experience that connected him to political and Masonic networks debating the colonies’ independence. In 1812 he returned to the Americas and distinguished himself in the Río de la Plata campaign, winning at San Lorenzo and rising to the rank of general in the revolutionary government. He later organized and led the crossing of the Andes and the liberation of Chile, then proceeded to Peru, where he proclaimed independence in 1821. His military career and political project sought to unite civilian and military forces to consolidate independent nations in the region. Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries his figure became the focus of a strong heroic cult: he was compared to leaders such as Washington and Bolívar and became a symbol of national unity in Argentina. Biographies and public commemorations helped shape his legacy as the “Liberator” of the southern continent, emphasizing discipline, duty and sacrifice in service of the independence cause.
