José María Alfredo Aznar López is a Spanish politician who served two terms as Prime Minister from 1996 to 2004, representing the People's Party (PP). Trained in Law at the Complutense University of Madrid, he began his career as a state finance inspector and rose in regional politics as president of the Junta of Castile and León before leading the national opposition. Under his leadership, the PP established itself as a central centre‑right force in Spain. His government implemented liberal economic policies—deregulation, privatizations and public spending cuts—that helped steer Spain into the eurozone and supported strong economic growth, although critics pointed to increased job insecurity and reduced investment in social welfare. Domestically he faced the persistent violence of ETA and a failed dialogue attempt in 1998–1999. In foreign policy, Aznar aligned Spain with the United States after September 11, supporting interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq, a stance that provoked widespread controversy at home, especially after the 2004 Madrid bombings and their effect on the election outcome. After leaving office he remained active publicly through the FAES think tank, roles in the private sector and influential positions in political debates.
