José Mojica Marins was a filmmaker, actor, screenwriter, composer and television host, recognized as a central figure in Brazilian horror cinema. Creator and portrayer of the iconic Zé do Caixão — the character that brought his work international recognition — Mojica worked across diverse genres, from scatological horror to westerns and pornochanchada, maintaining a body of work defined by an auteur style that was later reassessed and gained prestige within the global cult circuit. A self-taught artist from his youth, he founded an acting school and the Companhia Cinematográfica Atlas, making amateur films that launched him into the professional circuit. His work, initially marginalized by mainstream critics, came to be cited by filmmakers and alternative Brazilian movements and was named as an influence by figures in the country’s avant-garde cinema. Beyond film, Mojica had a long television career, almost always in the guise of Zé do Caixão, whose image — top hat, black cape and long fingernails — became emblematic of his public persona. After periods of lower visibility, his cinema was rediscovered by new generations; he participated in anthologies, and left posthumous titles completed and released as part of his cultural legacy.
