Josef Vissarionovitch Stalin, born Iossif Vissarionovitch Djugashvili, was General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and of the Central Committee from 1922 until his death in 1953, thus serving as the leader of the Soviet Union.
Under Stalin's leadership, the Soviet Union played a decisive role in defeating Nazi Germany in World War II (1939–1945) and came to attain superpower status after rapid industrialization and improvements in the social conditions of the Soviet people. During this period, the country also expanded its territory to a size similar to that of the former Russian Empire.
