Josep Lluís Sert was a Catalan architect whose work moved between Mediterranean regionalism and international modernism. Trained in Barcelona, he early drew close to local references such as Gaudí and to artists in his circle, which gave him a visual sensitivity that evolved into a rationalist architecture and urbanism applied to institutional and cultural projects. Active in the mid‑twentieth century, he became notable for his role in the Spanish Pavilion at the 1937 Paris Exhibition and for his collaboration with the Joan Miró Foundation. Exiled to New York, he took on prominent positions at Harvard, where he designed buildings for science and university housing, establishing himself as an influential figure in architectural education and practice in the United States. His body of work includes public buildings in Barcelona as well as projects in France, the United States and the Middle East, such as the Maeght Foundation and the U.S. embassy in Baghdad. The combination of functional rigor and attention to cultural context secured his lasting legacy in modern architecture and urban planning.
