American journalist and columnist Joseph Wright Alsop V was an influential figure in the press and in Washington’s circles of power from the 1940s through the 1960s. A Harvard graduate, he became known for high‑impact reporting and for a nationally syndicated column, initially written in partnership with his brother Stewart, which gave him a wide audience and privileged access to political and diplomatic leaders. Alsop combined fact‑driven reporting with work as an informant for intelligence agencies, using international coverage as operational cover for occasional missions.
