Joseph Léonce Di Mambro was the cofounding leader of an esoteric organization known as the Order of the Solar Temple, a movement that emerged in the 1980s and spread through Francophone countries. A jeweler by trade and an esoteric activist, Di Mambro had previously founded earlier New Age–style groups and held a central position in the collective’s hierarchical and ritual structure, which borrowed symbols from the Templars, the Rosicrucians, and Theosophy. Under his leadership, the organization built a network of public clubs and secret societies with initiatory degrees modeled on Masonic systems, attracting mostly members from comfortable socioeconomic backgrounds. Practices combined rituals, belief in ascended masters, and apocalyptic elements tied to a mythology that placed evolved beings beyond Earth. Di Mambro’s notoriety, however, stems from tragic episodes associated with the group in the 1990s, when mass deaths and acts of violence occurred in several countries, prompting investigations and widespread public attention. Those events decisively shaped how society and scholars of contemporary religious movements assessed the Order of the Solar Temple.
