Joseph P. Kerwin is a physician and former American astronaut, known for serving as the Science Pilot on the Skylab 2 mission (May 25 to June 22, 1973). He was the first American physician selected for astronaut training and the first U.S. doctor to travel into space, a role that made him one of the pioneers of space medicine. A graduate in medicine from Northwestern University and a captain in the U.S. Navy, Kerwin gained experience as a flight surgeon and pilot, and also served as CAPCOM during the Apollo 13 mission. After Skylab, he led the Orbit Operations Division of the Astronaut Office, coordinating rendezvous, satellite deployment and recovery activities, and providing crew support for Space Shuttle payloads. In the 1980s he held scientific management positions at the Johnson Space Center — including Director of Space and Life Sciences — evaluating medical support for crews and conducting technical investigations such as the report on the Challenger accident. After leaving NASA in 1987, he worked in the aerospace industry on projects related to extravehicular systems and the integration of medical support for crewed flight. An author and contributor to works on Skylab, Kerwin has been honored with awards including the Navy Distinguished Service Medal and induction into the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame (1997), leaving a significant legacy at the intersection of medicine and space exploration.
