Joseph Antoine Ferdinand Plateau was a Belgian physicist and mathematician whose 19th-century research influenced both optics and mathematical physics. A professor of experimental physics in Ghent, he graduated from the University of Liège, where in 1829 he defended a concise dissertation that already brought together studies on color perception, intersections of rotating curves, and distortion of moving images.
In 1832 he invented the phénakistiscope, a stroboscopic device made of two disks—one with evenly spaced slits and the other with a sequence of images—that, when rotated in synchrony, produced the illusion of motion. This principle was one of the technical and conceptual precursors to the development of cinema.
Beyond contributions to optics and visual perception, Plateau investigated capillarity and surface tension. His studies of soap films gave rise to the so-called Plateau laws, which describe the area-minimizing structures formed by surfaces in foams, and lent his name to the mathematical problem of minimal surfaces associated with his work.
