Joyce DeWitt is an American actress whose prominence was established by her portrayal of Janet Wood on the sitcom Three's Company, a role she played for the show's entire original run (1977–1984). Her work on one of the highest-rated comedies on American television defined her career and made her a recognizable figure in the television pop culture of the 1970s and 1980s. A trained theater artist, DeWitt began her stage career at a young age and completed a Master of Fine Arts, alternating between television and theater work over the following decades. After her television success she appeared sporadically in independent films and in numerous theatrical productions, and took part in specials, series episodes, and television game shows. In addition to her artistic work, she participated in philanthropic initiatives related to hunger and social assistance, including events on Capitol Hill and awards ceremonies. Her public image also drew media attention because of a legal matter stemming from a traffic violation in 2009, which was resolved by a court settlement in 2010. DeWitt’s legacy remains chiefly tied to the cultural impact of Three's Company and the enduring public identification with the character Janet Wood, which has kept her presence alive through reruns, tributes, and related productions.
