Juan Rulfo was a Mexican writer, screenwriter and photographer whose compact yet powerful work exerted a profound influence on twentieth-century Latin American literature. Born into a family of rural landowners ruined by the Mexican Revolution, his personal experiences—family losses and life in the countryside—infuse the desolate landscapes and the themes of death, memory and silence that recur in his writing. He published only two major works during his lifetime: the short-story collection El llano en llamas (1953) and the novel Pedro Páramo (1955). Both became landmarks for their spare language and their ability to condense the atmospheres and voices of rural Mexico, helping to shape what would come to be called magical realism and influencing generations of writers of the Latin American “boom.” In addition to fiction, Rulfo worked on film scripts, oversaw publications at the Instituto Nacional Indígena and devoted himself to photography. Later honors, such as the Prince of Asturias Award in 1983, attest to the significance of his literary and cultural legacy in the Hispanic-American world.
