Judith Arlene Resnik was an American electrical engineer and computer scientist whose career also encompassed biomedical engineering and aviation; she was also recognized as a NASA astronaut. She was notable for her academic background—an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from Carnegie Mellon and a doctorate from the University of Maryland—and for technical contributions to integrated-circuit projects and radar and missile systems while working at RCA and later at Xerox. Selected by NASA at age 28 as a mission specialist in the historic group that for the first time included women, Resnik helped develop software and operational procedures for space missions and operated the shuttle’s robotic arm during her first flight, STS-41-D, aboard Discovery. She logged 145 hours in orbit and became the fourth woman to fly in space. Her career was cut short by the Challenger space shuttle disaster in 1986, when mission STS-51-L was lost shortly after launch. Resnik left both a technical and symbolic legacy: a pioneer among women in space exploration and a figure noted for her combination of academic excellence, technical skill, and public service.
