Jules Émile Frédéric Massenet was a French composer whose work shaped the operatic scene at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Trained at the Paris Conservatory and awarded the Grand Prix de Rome in 1862, he became known for his melancholic lyricism and theatrical sensitivity in his scores. His oratorio Marie‑Madeleine won critical acclaim and helped secure his reputation among peers such as Tchaikovsky and Gounod. Massenet combined elements of Wagnerian leitmotif technique with a distinctly French aesthetic more focused on singing and sentimental expression — a quality that drew criticism for alleged “ornamentation,” but also great popularity with audiences. Among his most frequently performed works are the operas Manon (1884), Werther (1892) and Thaïs (1894), which remain in the international repertoire. In addition to operas, he composed ballets, oratorios, cantatas, orchestral pieces and about 200 songs. As a professor of composition at the Paris Conservatory from 1878, he exerted a lasting influence on generations of composers, including figures active in France and abroad.
