Jules Raimu, stage name of Jules Auguste Muraire, was one of the leading French actors of the 1930s and 1940s, celebrated in both theatre and sound film. Originally from Toulon, he began his career in café-concerts and music halls before establishing himself as a revue and comedy actor in Paris, where he worked with figures such as Sacha Guitry. His voice and dramatic presence made him a recognizable figure with the advent of talking pictures. The high point of his career came through his collaboration with Marcel Pagnol: Raimu immortalized the role of César in the so-called Marseilles trilogy — Marius, Fanny, and César — and starred in landmark works such as The Baker's Wife. These roles cemented his reputation for portraying deeply human characters rooted in the French provinces and made him Pagnol’s preferred performer. Also active in productions by other major directors of the time, he appeared in films such as Un carnet de bal and L'École des cocottes, and was invited to join the Comédie-Française in 1943. His film and stage work influenced generations of French actors, leaving a lasting legacy in the national theatre and cinema tradition.
