Jules Tannery was a French mathematician and educator whose career was notable for work on the foundations and methodology of mathematics. A student of Charles Hermite, he defended a 1874 thesis on integrals of linear differential equations with variable coefficients, and he devoted himself both to theoretical research and to critical reflection on mathematical practice. He discovered a fourth‑order surface whose geodesic lines are all algebraic, a result that illustrates his interest in classical problems of differential geometry. More than an inventor of techniques, Tannery was distinguished as a rigorous critic, concerned with clarifying concepts and methods and with prompting mathematical thought beyond mere symbol manipulation. He directly influenced subsequent generations, encouraging figures such as Paul Painlevé, Jules Drach and Émile Borel to pursue scientific careers. His work includes pedagogical texts and philosophical studies on foundations, still consulted in specialized editions and archives.
