Julian Hawthorne was an American writer and journalist, the son of novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne. Versatile across genres, he published poems, novels, short stories, detective fiction, essays, travel books, biographies and historical works, building a prolific literary output between the 1870s and 1900s. Partly educated in Germany and with experience in engineering posts in New York, Hawthorne spent long periods in Europe, where he published novels such as Bressant, Idolatry, Garth and Sebastian Strome. In addition to his fiction, he devoted himself to preserving and interpreting his father’s legacy, editing and publishing studies about Nathaniel and the family, including Dr. Grimshawe’s Secret and two biographies of the Hawthornes. Also active as a journalist and essayist, he wrote literary criticism and polemical articles — among them pieces that examined American realism and profiles of contemporaries such as James Russell Lowell. He also produced series of detective fiction inspired by real figures from the investigative world. Julian Hawthorne’s career combined creative work with editorial and critical activity: he left a varied body of work that engages with nineteenth-century literary traditions and with efforts to preserve his family’s literary memory.
