Julie Taymor is an American director and screenwriter working in theater, opera, and film, known for a visual language strongly shaped by the use of masks and puppetry, an influence of her studies and work in Indonesia. Trained in mythology and folklore at Oberlin College, she pursued an international early career, founding the company Teatr Loh and deepening her engagement with Asian performance traditions that shaped her theatrical style. Her best-known work is the stage adaptation of The Lion King (1997), a production that became a global phenomenon, seen by more than 100 million people and staged in dozens of countries. For the production Taymor won the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Musical—becoming the first woman to receive that prize—and another Tony for costume design, while also taking an active role in designing masks and writing additional lyrics. In film she directed titles such as Frida (2002), which received multiple Oscar nominations, and Across the Universe (2007), a musical built around the songs of the Beatles. Over her career she has also directed Shakespeare plays and opera productions, establishing a reputation for visual invention and for integrating traditional arts into contemporary works.
