Justus von Liebig was a German chemist and inventor whose work deeply influenced nineteenth‑century organic chemistry and agriculture. As a professor at Giessen, he established a laboratory‑based teaching model that trained generations of scientists and spread precise analytical methods, helping to consolidate chemistry as a scientific discipline. Liebig described numerous organic compounds and refined analytical techniques, and he applied chemical principles to plant physiology. His demonstration that plants assimilate primarily inorganic elements rather than decomposing organic matter paved the way for modern agricultural chemistry and for the NPK fertiliser formula used in crop nutrition. Active as an editor and author, he founded the journal Annalen der Pharmacie (later Annalen der Chemie) and published dozens of influential works on chemistry applied to agriculture, physiology and commerce. He also developed food products and meat extracts that became widely known. His legacy includes the spread of practical laboratory instruction, the institutionalisation of scientific journals and lasting impacts on agricultural production and the chemical industry; the University of Giessen was later named in his honour.
