K.R.H. Sonderborg, the professional name of Kurt Rudolf Hoffmann, was a German painter and printmaker prominent in the postwar period and an important figure of Art Informel in Germany. Trained in the arts in Hamburg and further trained in Paris at Atelier 17 with Stanley William Hayter, he joined the Zen 49 group in 1953 and came into contact with movements such as Tachisme and Action Painting during extended working stays in cities including London, New York, Tokyo, Rome and Paris.
His work developed toward a gestural abstraction characterized by broad, rapid brushstrokes that expose the painter’s gesture, strong contrasts of black and white and, later, the use of vivid colors such as cadmium red. He won international recognition at exhibitions and biennials — among them Venice (1958), Tokyo (printmaking prize, 1960) and São Paulo (Grand International Drawing Prize, 1963) — and participated in Documenta in Kassel.
As a teacher, he held the chair of painting at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Stuttgart from 1965 to 1990 and served as vice-rector of the academy from 1980 to 1984. His legacy remains linked to the renewal of German gestural painting and to his influence on subsequent generations through teaching and international activity.
