Karl Schwarzschild was a German physicist and astronomer recognized as one of the founders of modern astrophysics. Trained in Munich, he made original contributions to stellar photometry — including the formula now associated with the “Schwarzschild exponent” — and advanced photographic and spectroscopic methods to measure magnitudes, radial velocities, and atmospheric compositions. At Göttingen and later as director of the Potsdam Observatory, Schwarzschild worked on radiative transfer and radiative equilibrium in stellar atmospheres, anticipating the importance of radiation and convection in stellar structure. He designed instruments, such as a multi-slit interferometer and a spectrograph, which expanded the precision of observations of stars and binary systems. His academic career involved collaboration with prominent mathematicians and physicists, and he played an important institutional role as head of Germany’s leading astronomical observatory. With technical publications on spatial curvature, comets, and stellar energy transport, he left methodological and theoretical work that influenced subsequent generations of astrophysicists.
