Karl Waldemar Ziegler was a German chemist whose career moved between fundamental research and industrial innovation. His investigations of free radicals, organometallic compounds, and macrocycle synthesis expanded theoretical understanding of molecular stability and carbon–carbon bond dissociation, earning him the Liebig Memorial Medal in 1935.

Ziegler developed important synthetic methods, including routes to organolithium reagents and the cycloaddition of long chains under high-dilution conditions, which enabled the preparation of macrolactones with yields superior to earlier procedures. These advances influenced complex syntheses, such as the preparation of natural fragrance components derived from musk.

His work culminated in the discovery of the catalysts that now bear his name, together with studies on alkali‑metal compounds; combining titanium halides with aluminates made possible the polymerization of ethylene under milder industrial conditions and the production of high‑molecular‑weight polyethylene. For this decisive contribution to polymer chemistry and industrial applications he received the 1963 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, shared with Giulio Natta.

Throughout his life, Ziegler advocated integrating basic and applied research, leaving a lasting legacy in organic chemistry and synthetic materials technology.
