Kay Bailey Hutchison is an attorney, journalist and Republican politician whose public career spanned more than four decades. A law graduate of the University of Texas, she began as a legal correspondent on television before entering state politics, where she served in the Texas House in the 1970s and held positions in federal agencies. After a stint in the private sector, she was elected Texas state treasurer in 1990. In 1993 she won a special election to the U.S. Senate, becoming the first woman to represent Texas in that chamber. Re-elected in 1994, 2000 and 2006, she served on key committees — Appropriations; Commerce, Science and Transportation; Rules; and Veterans’ Affairs — and held leadership roles in the Republican caucus, including Policy Chair. She was known for her support of programs such as NASA and for generally conservative positions on economic and foreign-policy issues. After leaving the Senate in 2013, she returned to private legal practice and was later appointed U.S. Permanent Representative to NATO, a post she held from 2017 to 2021. Her career combines legal and media work, a long legislative record and diplomatic service in the realm of American foreign policy.
