Kees van Dongen, the professional name of Cornelis Theodorus Maria van Dongen, was a painter born in the Netherlands who trained in Rotterdam and settled in Paris, where he quickly embraced the ideas of the Fauves alongside Manguin, Derain and Matisse. Initially interested in port scenes and urban life, his work evolved into striking portraits of figures from social and artistic circles, noted for their bold use of color and expressive line. From the early 20th century he took part in the Salon des Indépendants and exhibited alongside artists such as Vlaminck and Derain; the dealer Ambroise Vollard organized his first solo show, which advanced his career. Invited by the group Die Brücke, he also aligned with German Expressionism and traveled through Spain, Morocco, Italy and Egypt in search of new inspirations. Based between Paris and Monaco from the 1930s, Van Dongen established a reputation as a portraitist of the elite and figures of the performing world. His works are now in major public collections, including the Nouveau Musée National de Monaco, the Van Gogh Museum and institutions in Moscow, Ottawa and Tehran, securing his place in the landscape of European modernism.
