Kenneth Noland was an American painter central to the consolidation of Color Field painting and the Washington Color School. Though he began his career associated with Abstract Expressionism in the post‑World War II period, his work evolved toward a language of pure color and controlled surface, moving away from an emphasis on brushwork in favor of paint soaked into the canvas.

His output is known for formal series — concentric targets, chevrons, stripes, and shaped canvases — that explore the relationship among color, form, and edge. In the 1950s and 1960s, his adoption of soak‑stain techniques and his participation in the exhibition Post‑Painterly Abstraction (curated by Clement Greenberg) were milestones that helped establish the Color Field movement in contemporary American art.

Noland also pioneered the shaped canvas, making the support’s edge an integral part of the work and complicating chromatic structures in subsequent decades. He received major retrospectives, including at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (1977), and his Stripe Paintings were shown at Tate in 2006. His legacy lies in the pursuit of a simplified abstraction in which color and format frame the visual experience, shifting the artist’s role away from the surface toward the painting itself.
