Knut Hamsun was a Norwegian writer credited with renewing literature at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century. His novel Hunger (1890) brought him prestige by portraying with psychological intensity the urban misery and existential crisis of a young writer; from that point he established himself as a singular voice in modern fiction. Hamsun experimented with narrative form and intimate points of view in novels such as Mysteries, Pan and Victoria, alternating symbolism, pantheism and reflections on isolation.
Awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1920 for Growth of the Soil, he exerted great influence on European letters, read both for his languagecraft and for his depictions of subjectivity. His life included long periods of movement—varied jobs in Norway and the United States—that fed his critical view of modernity.
Personal life and relationships marked his work: marriages, frequent relocations and a search for solitude in which to write. Hamsun left a lasting legacy in Scandinavian literature, particularly for the psychological innovation of his novels, although his public persona remains complex within the cultural landscape.
