Kofi Atta Annan was a Ghanaian diplomat of international prominence, best known for leading the United Nations as its seventh Secretary‑General from 1997 to 2006. During his tenure he promoted global health and development initiatives, notably spearheading the effort to create the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, a move that earned him, together with the UN, the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001.

Trained in economics and international relations, and with a long career in UN agencies, Annan held senior posts in financial management and peacekeeping operations before reaching the organization’s top office. His career included difficult decisions and criticism, particularly regarding the Rwandan genocide (1994), about which he later acknowledged that he could have acted more decisively.

As Secretary‑General, Annan advocated for stronger international coordination in humanitarian crises, the fight against HIV/AIDS and respect for international law, and he opposed the 2003 invasion of Iraq on grounds of questionable legality. He also engaged on issues such as Darfur and women’s rights, but he faced internal controversies within the UN that weakened part of his authority.

His legacy is mixed: remembered both for pursuing reforms and wide‑ranging humanitarian initiatives and for controversial decisions in complex crises, leaving him a central figure in the recent history of multilateral diplomacy.
