Kristin Hersh is an American singer, guitarist, songwriter, and author, known both for her solo work and for her role in the alternative rock bands Throwing Muses and 50FootWave. The author of eleven solo albums, Hersh moves between dissonant timbres and folk arrangements, with stream-of-consciousness lyrics that reflect personal experiences and an intense approach to songcraft. Rooted in the United States’ alternative scene, she rose to prominence with Throwing Muses, the first American band signed to the British label 4AD, and later secured U.S. deals that kept the band active on European and American tours. In the late 1990s and 2000s she released acoustic and electric recordings demonstrating her versatility—from the minimalism of Hips and Makers to the power-trio energy of 50FootWave. Concerned with artistic autonomy and distribution, she founded the label ThrowingMusic and developed direct-to-fan initiatives, such as subscription services and digital projects that let her control formats and releases. Her career is characterized by a pursuit of independence from the industry and by an approach that treats music as human expression rather than commodity.
