Krisztina Egerszegi is a retired Hungarian swimmer, regarded as one of Hungary’s greatest Olympic champions of the modern era. A backstroke and medley specialist, she rose to international prominence while still a teenager and dominated the 200 m backstroke for nearly two decades, holding the world record for almost 17 years.
A three-time Olympian (1988, 1992, 1996), she won five Olympic gold medals—becoming the first woman to win five individual Olympic finals—and is one of four athletes in history to win the same event at three consecutive Games (200 m backstroke in 1988, 1992 and 1996). Her achievements also include world and European titles, and multiple records in the 100 m and 200 m backstroke set at the same competition.
At national and continental level, Egerszegi was repeatedly named Hungary’s top athlete and swimmer of the year, collecting dozens of titles at the Hungarian championships. Her performances shaped Hungarian women’s swimming and inspired later generations, leaving a legacy of technical and competitive excellence in the sport.
In recognition of her career she received official honors and wide international acclaim, establishing herself as a historical reference in world swimming.
