Ajatashatru, also called Kunika, was a king of the Haryanka branch of Magadha whose actions helped establish that kingdom as a power in northern India. Son of Bimbisara, his rise involved deposing his father and conducting expansive military campaigns: he fought neighboring kingdoms, occupied Kashi, and waged a decisive war against the republican league of the Vajjika/Licchavis, ultimately incorporating Vaishali into Magadhan control. During his reign the fortification that gave rise to the city of Pataliputra was built, a key urban and strategic center for regional power.
Buddhist and Jain religious sources preserve largely concordant accounts of him and a number of legendary episodes associated with his birth and the epithet Kunika. Ancient chronologies place him as a contemporary of Mahavira and the Buddha, and texts such as the Samaññaphala Sutta depict him visiting religious teachers before hearing the Buddha. Modern dating estimates vary, producing imprecision in the exact dates of his reign.
Ajatashatru left a significant political legacy: through territorial conquests and military and urban reorganization, he helped transform Magadha into the region’s dominant power, a development that influenced subsequent political and cultural developments on the subcontinent.
