Kurt von Hammerstein-Equord was a career German general who held senior posts in the Reichswehr of the Weimar Republic, rising to the rank of Generaloberst and heading troop command in the early 1930s. Trained in Prussian academies and a veteran of the First World War, he distinguished himself as a staff officer and, from 1929, as head of the Truppenamt, a post that effectively put him in charge of military planning despite the limitations imposed by the Treaty of Versailles. As head of the Army from 1930, he led rearmament programs and drew up mobilization and defense plans that reflected his concern for state security while avoiding military adventurism and political extremes. Known for his aversion to risk and radicalism, he became a close adviser to moderate political figures and warned about the dangers posed by Adolf Hitler. Because of his opposition to Nazism, he resigned in 1933 and was removed from command; during the Second World War he was briefly recalled and again dismissed for his critical stance toward the regime. He took part in resistance networks against Hitler and was associated with conspiracies that aimed to overthrow the Nazi leadership. His legacy is that of a conservative officer committed to institutional legality and unwilling to accommodate totalitarianism.
