Lady May Abel Smith was a member of the British royal family, a great‑granddaughter of Queen Victoria and a niece of Queen Mary of Teck. Born Princess May Helen Emma of Teck, her ancestry also connected her to the Dutch royal family. During the First World War her family renounced their German titles and adopted the surname Cambridge, after which she was known as Lady May Cambridge until her marriage. In 1931 she married Henry Abel Smith, with whom she had three children. Though distant in the line of succession and without official state duties, she took part in significant royal ceremonies and events, including the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II and the wedding of the Prince of Wales to Lady Diana Spencer. She spent most of her life within aristocratic circles and among the wider European royal kinship network. She died in 1994 and was buried in the Royal Burial Ground at Frogmore, near Windsor Castle. Her funeral was attended by representatives of the royal family, reflecting her respected place as a historic member of the British royal house.
