Lale Andersen was a German singer and songwriter whose career was defined by her performance of "Lili Marleen" (1939), a song that became a cultural phenomenon during World War II and reached listeners on both sides of the conflict. Originating in Berlin’s cabaret circuit and with seasons in Zurich and Munich, Andersen built a reputation as an interpreter of melancholic, intimate material.
The international success of "Lili Marleen" owed much to broadcasts by the Belgrade military radio station, which made it an emotional emblem for soldiers at the front; the song, however, ran afoul of Nazi censorship, resulting in bans and restrictions imposed on the artist. Her personal and professional life was marked by hardships during the war years, including removals from the public sphere and pressure from the authorities.
After the war, Andersen resumed her musical activity and scored new successes, took part in the 1961 Eurovision Song Contest and maintained a touring career across Europe and North America until retiring in 1967. Also the author of books on music and an autobiography published shortly before her death, she left a legacy recognized both for her association with the emblematic "Lili Marleen" and for her role as a European voice of cabaret and popular song repertoire.
