William IV of Hesse‑Kassel, known as William the Wise, was landgrave of Hesse‑Kassel and the founder of the enduring Kassel branch of the House of Hesse. He inherited his father’s share in 1567 and worked to consolidate the territory: he instituted a law of primogeniture to prevent further partitions and governed with strictness, appointing specialized officials and exercising close control over scarce resources.
In religious matters he took an active part in defending the Protestant Reformation, striving to unite the different Protestant currents against Catholicism while seeking to avoid direct military confrontation. That stance gave him a significant role in the troubled confessional landscape of the sixteenth century.
William was also noted as a patron of the arts and sciences and as a pioneer of astronomical research in Kassel. Under his patronage mechanical innovations were adopted that improved the accuracy of local instruments and produced a star catalogue of about one thousand stars, whose observations were preserved and later published.
Married to Duchess Sabina of Württemberg, he sired a large family and left a dynastic and scientific legacy that bolstered the continuity and cultural reputation of his branch of the royal house.
