Philip II of Hesse-Rheinfels was a 16th-century German noble, known as Philip the Younger, who received as his share the territory around Rheinfels Castle and the town of Sankt Goar after his father's domains were divided in 1567. The third son of Philip I of Hesse and Christina of Saxony, he administered several smaller localities—including Schotten, Bad Homburg and parts of the former county of Katzenelnbogen—economically important regions north of the Main. In 1569 he married Countess Anna Elizabeth of Palatinate-Simmern, a connection that linked his house to the influential family of Elector Frederick III, a leading figure of Calvinism. Despite this political and dynastic tie, his activity remained chiefly local, focused on managing his Rhine territories. Philip died at Rheinfels Castle in 1583 and, having left no issue, his lands were reabsorbed into the patrimony of his elder brother William IV of Hesse-Kassel. His burial in Sankt Goar was commemorated with a Renaissance monument erected by William, which consecrated the landgrave’s memory in the local landscape.
