Lawrence M. “Larry” Poons is an American abstract painter whose career spans major currents in postwar art. Emerging on the New York scene in the 1960s, he first became known for paintings of dots and ovals set against vibrant grounds — the so-called Dot paintings — which linked him to Op Art and debates about perception and visual movement. He soon moved to looser, more painterly approaches, exploring fields of color and gestural marks that brought him closer to Color Field painting and Lyrical Abstraction.

Represented by influential galleries and featured in documentaries about the New York art scene, Poons maintained a critical presence even when his stylistic shifts provoked controversy; critics and peers, including Frank Stella, followed and supported his development. Beyond painting, his career includes participation in collective art projects and forays into experimental music in the 1960s.

His work is held in major museum collections in the United States and Europe, confirming his significance within the canon of contemporary art. He divides his time between New York and upstate, balancing studio work with another passion: vintage motorcycling.
